Golden Chick - First Kansas Location!

In 1967 a golden chick named Clucky started on his culinary journey by opening a restaurant in San Marcos, Texas. Well technically Howard and Jacque Walker opened the restaurant, but Clucky is the cute mascot helping to keep it going today where the chain has grown to over 240 locations throughout Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Oklahoma, and now KANSAS! I was lucky enough to attend a soft opening of this new Wichita restaurant a couple days before their official opening and I am excited to share with y’all my thoughts!

For the soft opening event they had a limited menu featuring something from the main four menu categories: catfish, roasted chicken, chicken tenders, and chicken sandwiches. I brought Melaina along for the ride and she ended up going with the chicken sandwich with a side of fries.

I, being a self proclaimed connoisseur thanks to my many years of consumption, ordered the chicken tenders with a side of mac and cheese. I also made sure to get the zing sauce for dipping my tenders in and that was easily one of the best decisions I could have made. I don’t know exactly what is in that sauce, but I want a bathtub filled with it so I can put it on literally everything….or to maybe even just drink it straight. lol

Finally, we both also decided to try out their gourmet packaged brownies and y’all….I was shook by how good they were. They were extremely soft with a ton of amazing rich chocolate fudge flavor. Easily some of the best packaged brownies I have ever had.

Here is a glimpse at their menu:

Crew Reviews:

Melaina: 8/10

"Overall great place, good food, and fun decor. The chicken sandwich was fresh and the zing sauce added just enough kick to where it wasn't spicy, but had a lot of flavor. The fries were very crispy, which I love, and the rolls were fluffy and warm. Also the brownie was amazing. It was soft, fudgy, and would've been great warmed up. Since it is new the menu options are a bit limited, so it will be nice to see what they add in the future."

"Great food - the chicken tenders were on point and especially with the zing sauce, it paired up very well. The mashed potatoes were good, could be a bit better. More options like loaded mashed potatoes would be nice. The bread was amazing, very soft and delicious."

Walking in to Golden Chick the first thing you notice is the cute decor featuring fun wall art, light up signs, and a very fancy textured tile ceiling that is definitely not typical of a fast food place. During the soft opening event the employees, manager, and franchise owner were all welcoming and made sure you had everything you needed and that the food was all was to your liking. I hope they continue with the same level of service after opening! As for the food, even though I received my food for free this time around, I can say with total honesty that it was absolutely delicious. The chicken after marinating for 24 hours is hand battered and fried giving it a nice crunch while still maintaining a juiciness and wonderful flavor. As I mentioned above I paired my chicken tenders with their special zing sauce which added some extra flavor and a bit of a kick that really brought the chicken to the next level. The mac and cheese was unfortunately a little reminiscent of frozen meal mac and cheese and not the quite the level I expected from an original southern eatery, but the yeast roll made up for that. I personally think that, as much as it pains me to say it, the yeast roll at Golden Chick is better than my beloved Texas Roadhouse rolls. Not only was it bigger in size, but it was light and fluffy and had a sweetness to it that tasted like a Texas Roadhouse roll that already had the cinnamon butter on it. It was absolutely amazing and I could have ate a dozen no sweat. Overall, I feel honored to have been invited to the soft opening event and you can bet I will definitely be returning with more of my friends and family in the future!
