Foodie Friday: Carolyn's Essenhaus - Arlington, Kansas

Once I heard about this restaurant I knew I wanted to bring Tom since

he is a German food loving fool. In the end the menu wasn't exactly

what I was expecting, but it certainly was a great lunch and I am

still so glad that Tom and I finally got to go! Scroll on down

to read more about our experience!

We walked across the sleepy small town main street and into

the busy café with décor and a comforting feeling a little like that

of Grandma's house. We chose a table in the middle of the open

layout and a waitress radiating positivity was at our table

immediately to take our drink orders.

.

We looked over the menus sitting at the table and eventually were

able to decide what we wanted to for lunch.

.

.

Tom went with the chopped steak topped with onions along with

sides of mashed potatoes and sauerkraut.

.

.

I chose the chicken fried steak with a side of mashed potatoes and green beans.

.

.

Once I saw the word "Pie" written on one of the marker boards above

the kitchen area I knew that I was definitely saving room for a

slice and ended up choosing the chocolate peanut butter pie.

.

.

Tom also joined in on the dessert fun and got a slice of the rocky road pie.

I do have to say that I was a little disappointed to see the menu

lacking in actual German food for Tom's sake, but other than that

I really have no complaints about this little small town gem. The

inside of the restaurant was very homey and as I mentioned before

reminded me a bit of a Grandma's house... in a good way. I felt like

we were well taken care of by our waitress who was so so sweet. When

it came to the food I was a little sad I had missed the special for the

day which was a chicken strip bowl complete with potatoes, gravy, and

bacon. However, one bite into my chicken fried steak and I was feeling

pretty good about my on menu choice. I am not a huge fan of chicken

fried steak anymore, but I would definitely eat that one again and would

have to say it is one of the best chicken fried steaks that I have ever had.

Definitely easy to see why they call it a restaurant favorite! The homemade

bread was also solid and the pie was sooo worth saving room for with a rich

sweetness that hit just the right spot. All in all, while this might be a little

bit of a drive for me to visit, I would gladly return to eat here again

and recommend you do as well.
